I’ve taken all my book reviews to create this huge list of the best books book  for 11-year olds at the right reading level for 6th graders.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill FANTASY
Wonderfully crafted and imagined, this 2017 Newbery winner is a fairy tale of sorts about a good witch who rescues a town’s abandoned (the town thinks sacrificed) babies and gives them to another town to love. Except one baby who she adopts for her own; a special baby named Luna who is accidentally infused with moon magic. It’s also the story of the baby’s magical, bereaved mother, a wicked witch who feeds off sorrow, a woodcarver who wants justice, and most of all, Luna.

Princess Academy by Shannon Hale (series)
We love this book (and the series) because it’s a unique story with memorable, wonderful characters. Miri and the other girls in her mountain village are ordered to attend a newly created school to learn enough to be considered wife material for the prince. But the prince, when he does appear, sees cold and unfriendly making Miri reconsider what she wants. Then, when bandits take over the school and hold the girls hostage, Miri finds her inner strength and clarity of purpose.

E ducation minister Nick Gibb appeared on the Today programme this morning to defend the government's policy on tests for primary age children - and was challenged on air to answer a question written for 11-year-olds.

P arents and children are currently protesting against standardised tests for pupils, which they say are too tough and age 'inappropriate'.  They argue the Government has made tests that are typically used to measure schools performance into a more formal exercise with children being made feel like 'failures' if they fail them.
