Video has emerged of the shooting deaths of four Honduran civilians by US drugs enforcement agents - an incident the US authorities have for five years claimed took place after they were fired on.

The killing of the civilians - two pregnant women, a man and a child - by agents from a special team of the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), took place in a joint US-Honduran operation that was part of the US’s so-called war on drugs. The controversial policy dates back to the administration of Richard Nixon.

For five years, US authorities said the civilians who lost their lives, and others who were injured, were passengers on a boat it claimed had shot at the US officers. But video obtained by by ProPublica under a Freedom of Information request, challenges the DEA’s version of events.

If Honduras are to have any hope of progressing past Australia to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia, much will depend upon their answer to Tim Cahill.

While Australia sweats on the fitness of their greatest goal-scorer, the Honduran public are pleading with coach Jorge Luis Pinto to unleash the nation's own hero, 35-year-old Carlo Costly.

The veteran centre-forward is a national icon in Honduras. He is descended from football royalty, etched his status as a national team specialist and consistently delivers for Los Catrachos when they need him most. Most importantly, he refuses to retire from international football despite several attempts from Pinto to phase him out.

Honduras spans about 112,492 km 2 and has a population exceeding 9 million. [2] Its northern portions are part of the Western Caribbean Zone , as reflected in the area's demographics and culture. Honduras is known for its rich natural resources, including minerals , coffee , tropical fruit , and sugar cane , as well as for its growing textiles industry, which serves the international market.

The literal meaning of the term "Honduras" is "depths" in Spanish. The name could either refer to the bay of Trujillo as an anchorage, fondura in the Leonese dialect of Spanish, or to Columbus 's alleged quote that "Gracias a Dios que hemos salido de esas Honduras" ("Thank God we have departed from those depths"). It was not until the end of the 16th century that Honduras was used for the whole province. Prior to 1580, Honduras only referred to the eastern part of the province, and Higueras referred to the western part. [16] Another early name is Guaymuras , revived as the name for the political dialogue in 2009 that took place in Honduras as opposed to Costa Rica. [17]

San Pedro Sula:  The brave face of the Hondurans is verging on the point of arrogance ahead of their clash against Australia after one of their most distinguished players issued a condescending report on the Socceroos while local papers published the team's hotel location, travelling party details and training schedule.

The local reception in Honduras for the World Cup qualifying play-off against Australia has been one of drumming-up encouragement for "Los Catrachos" but their bid to gather support is coming at the cost of respect for the Socceroos, and potentially the security of the team.

Arguably the most recognisable player in Honduran history has described the Australian style of play as "simple", suggesting it is reflective of a country that has no football history. Former Inter Milan, Benfica and Cagliari forward, David Suazo admitted Australia are a strong team, but made no secret of his low opinion of their style of play and quality as a football country.
