I don t think it s as much about how skilled you "need" to be as it is, how skilled you need to be to "feel" confident in your ability to defend yourself in that kind of situation. Society tells us we have to be black belts in whatever martial art it is to be good at it. We have to be the best!! T.V. tells us it has to be BJJ, MT, Boxing, or Wrestling. Preferably all of them together. If you aren t training from a world class athlete that was a former or current world champion the your school sucks and you can t defend yourself. It s sad that that is the message that s out there, and judging by this very forum on a daily basis it s being heard loud and clear. The question should be, How do we teach the youth (that will be the next generation of martial artists in our world) that all this hype isn t the only way to go. As much as I enjoy watching MMA I have to ask myself if it s bad for martial arts on the whole.

An Israeli judoka champion who won a gold medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam judo tournament was forced to quietly sing his national anthem to himself during the medal ceremony after organisers refused to play the ‘Hatikvah’ or raise the Israeli flag.

Tal Flicker, who is currently ranked world number one in the under 66kg division, took home a gold in the same category on Thursday.

But his achievement was marred when he had to look at the International Judo Federation’s (IJF) flag and listen to its anthem rather than his own because of a ban in the Gulf state on the display of Israeli symbols.

When I asked butch-identified Nuyorican writer, poet and filmmaker Gabrielle Rivera to comment on her experiences with people assuming that she wants to "be a man" because of the way she dresses , she stated:

Brooklyn-based butch Susan Herr, founder of dapperQ, a fashion and empowerment website for the unconventionally masculine, expanded on this stating that her spoken word piece " The Butches Conceit " is a response to being questioned about her appearance and "speaks to the fundamental attractiveness of being authentic."

Writer Lindy West put it best in her post " Fierce Women's Judo Competitors Offend One Man's Delicate Sensibilities ": "To be clear: Anything on earth that a woman is capable of doing is womanly. It is impossible for a woman to be unwomanly because a woman is a woman. Therefore, anything a woman does is womanly by default."

A British Olympian was shot in the foot after  being caught in crossfire between Spanish police and terrorists in Cambrils.

Blood poured from his foot after he was hit by a piece of stray shrapnel during the gun battle which left five terrorists dead.

A young boy was there, so I stood up and grabbed him and said: What is wrong?   He just replied: Look over there.

There are more than 1,000 different forms of martial arts scattered around the world and dating back more than 2,000 years ago. When the martial arts started and where no one really knows. In our western culture we can date the development of martial arts such as archery and wrestling to ancient Greece. However there is evidence that martial art training dates to Babylonian times.

The origin of Japan s martial arts is vague, and what we know of it, is more legend than truth. However, the takenouchi-ryu martial art system founded in 1532 is considered the beginning of Japan s jujitsu forms. The system s founder taught jujitsu in a structured and methodical manner.

For the next several hundred years, the martial arts were refined by Samurai who made a lifetime study of some twenty or thirty martial arts. Of these arts only one was based on weaponless self defense jujitsu. By the mid-1800 s more than 700 different jujitsu systems existed. The most popular were takenouchi-ryu, jikishin-ryu, kyushinryu, yoshin-ryu, mirua-ryu, sekiguchi-ryu, kito-ryu, and tenshin-shinyo-ryu; the last two were instrumental in Judo s development.

An Israeli judoka who won gold at a competition quietly sang his national anthem to himself during the medal ceremony after organisers refused to play the music or raise his country's flag.

Tal Flicker, ranked world number one in the men's under-66 kilogram competition, won gold on Thursday (local time) at the Judo Grand-Slam in Abu Dhabi.

But as he took to the podium to accept his medal, the tournament organisers played the official music of the International Judo Federation (IJF) and raised the IJF's flag.
